A Short History of Louis Bleriot - Before the Flight -

InkShot.com chose to do the story of Louis Bleriot because he was an adventurous pioneer who took risks. He was born on 1st July, 1872 to Clémence and Charles Blériot. He was soon joined by four siblings. After attending the École Centrale in Paris for three years he served a term of compulsory Military Service and then started working at Bagués, and electrical engineering company based in Paris. In 1897 Blériot opened his own showroom after creating the world’s first practical headlamp for Automobiles. Soon he was supplying Renault and Panhard-Levassor. In October Louis first saw Alice Védéres whilst having lunch at a restaurant near his showroom, and the two were married on the 21st of February 1901. Louis had a long term interest in Aviation, and with his company doing well he was able to spend time and money indulging in his passion. By 1905 he has entered into a partnership with Gabriel Voisin to form an Aircraft company. The company itself was not a great success, but this did not stop a determined Blériot from his continued experimentation. Blériot quickly become a successful pilot in his own right, crowned with a successful cross-country flight by making a round trip from Toury to Arteny on 31st October 1908. Also in October of 1908, the English Newspaper, The Daily Mail announced a competition with a prize of £500 being offered for a flight made across the English Channel before the end of the year. With no attempt made by the end of the year, it was extended into 1909, and the prize money was increased to £1000. In July 1909 Louis Blériot was one of three people preparing to be the first to make this historic flight. Next Week - Behind the Scenes - Research.
